But one devastating moment changed everything.
A sudden fire tore through her family’s home, forcing Iyanna to leap from a window to escape the flames. In an instant, everything was gone. “I had nothing — no clothes, no shoes, not even a toothbrush,” she recalls. “All I had were the clothes I left the hospital in and a pair of size 13 men’s Uggs in the middle of summer.”
Her mother, who rushed home from work to find their house in flames, was left traumatized. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but its impact was life-changing.

Como estudiante de Morgan State University y becaria del Centro para el Avance Financiero® (CFA), Iyanna estaba enfocada en construir su futuro. Acababa de comenzar una pasantía de verano a través del programa CFA: emocionada, ambiciosa y decidida a dejar su huella.
Pero un momento devastador lo cambió todo.
Un incendio repentino arrasó con la casa de su familia, obligando a Iyanna a saltar por una ventana para escapar de las llamas. En un instante, todo desapareció. “No tenía nada: ni ropa, ni zapatos, ni siquiera un cepillo de dientes”, recuerda. “Lo único que tenía era la ropa con la que salí del hospital y un par de botas Ugg talla 13 de hombre, en pleno verano”.
Su madre, que regresó apresuradamente del trabajo para encontrar su casa envuelta en llamas, quedó profundamente afectada. La causa del incendio sigue siendo desconocida, pero su impacto fue transformador.
Fue entonces cuando intervino el Fondo Hand-Up del CFA de HomeFree-USA. Gracias a este fondo de emergencia, Iyanna y su familia pudieron recuperar algo de estabilidad, reemplazando artículos esenciales como ropa, zapatos y productos de higiene que muchas personas dan por sentados hasta que los pierden.

Hoy, Iyanna usa su historia para inspirar a otros a donar. “Las personas deberían apoyar al Fondo Hand-Up porque ayuda a estudiantes como yo, que enfrentan situaciones graves e inesperadas”, explica. “Sin ese apoyo, no sé qué habríamos hecho”.
