From First-Time Homebuyer to Celebrated Artist: The Journey of Preston Sampson

As we celebrate Homeownership Month, we reflect on the journeys that define the heart and mission of HomeFree-USA — journeys of vision, growth, and resilience. One such story is etched not only in memory but in color, texture, and soul, through a painting that hangs in our headquarters. Titled “All the Way Home,” it was created by none other than HomeFree-USA’s very first homebuyer: Preston Sampson.

In the early days of HomeFree-USA, when we were just beginning our mission to make homeownership accessible to all, a young man walked through our doors with a dream. That man was Preston Sampson. Guided by a belief in his potential and the support of a homeownership advisor, he became the first of thousands to cross the threshold into homeownership with HomeFree-USA by his side.

Now, over 30 years later, Preston is a nationally acclaimed artist whose work has been exhibited across the country — in galleries, museums, and public spaces — telling stories of Black life, culture, and strength. His painting “All the Way Home” is not just art; it’s history, legacy, and a tribute to the power of home. It depicts the strength of community, the embrace of family, and the forward stride toward a better future.

At HomeFree-USA, we don’t just help people buy homes — we help them build the foundation for their dreams. Preston’s journey from homebuyer to cultural contributor is a shining example of what happens when potential meets opportunity.

This Homeownership Month, we celebrate Preston Sampson — not only for his artistic brilliance but for reminding us that the path to home can be the beginning of something truly extraordinary.
