Moving Past Divorce to Thrive With a Home of Her Own

Divorce not only meant the end of Brittany’s marriage. It also meant the end of her time living in the family home. Amid all the uncertainty she was going through, she had to find a new place to live for herself and her daughter.

While the idea of buying her own place was tempting, she didn’t think homeownership as a newly-single mom would be possible. After all, she was rebuilding her life.  Could she buy a home on her own? “I always felt like if I didn’t have a bunch of money in savings, how was I going to come up with a downpayment?” she says.

But she realized that the end of a marriage didn’t have to mean the end of being a homeowner.

One day she happened to attend a HomeFree-USA homeownership workshop. As she listened to the presenter, she began to question her previous beliefs. The presenter explained what lenders were looking for and she realized she might be more ready for homeownership than she thought.  “I saw that there weren’t any limitations on the path to homeownership,” she says.

HomeFree-USA had given her a dream. They also provided her with a blueprint to help her achieve it. Brittany worked with a Homeownership Advisor who gave her an action plan. “That kind of set me in motion to be more disciplined about how I was spending my money,” she says.

She created a budget and got her finances in order.  Her Homeownership Advisor also helped her determine which lender offered the best deal for her particular situation.

“HomeFree-USA coached me through the uncertainty,” Brittany says. “Even though I was buying the house on my own, I felt like Homefree-USA was in it with me.”

All of us go through happy and painful life transitions. A home is a sanctuary that can see you through. This is something that Brittany knows for sure.
