I just left a class on storytelling, which got me to thinking about the lies we tell ourselves. ‘These pants are too tight because they were in the dryer too long’ or ‘if it wasn’t for … I’d have enough money to do…’ It never ends.
Let’s start today to end the lies we tell ourselves about our money. The following are a few of the lies we tell ourselves, and how to get beyond them.
I would be saving if… wasn’t happening. Although there are times when your finances are too tight to save, this should mean that you’ve cut everything down to the essentials. Often, we haven’t. How about cable TV, eating out, the cleaners instead of laundry? If you have a steady income, you can save. It doesn’t matter how much, just make sure you get into the habit of putting something away and not spending it all.
My kids have to participate in…and … activities. This is a tough one since no one wants their kids to go without. But many times there has to be a get real talk with yourself that starts with asking yourself if you can afford it without using credit cards or dipping into your newfound savings (which can not be tapped for this expense). Fortunately there are many free or discounted activities for kids. You can also ask for discounts if you have multiple children participating in the same things. Hey, this is what grandparents, uncles and aunts are for – remember it takes a village. Let’s all bring something to the table for the sake of the children.
I deserve it. Yes, you do. You also deserve to live a life free of worry about small things like bills and other mundane expenses that right now would be tough to deal with financially. You deserve to live an easy, happy life; and to get to that you must take a moment to assess where you are, where you want to go, what it will take to get there, and what you are willing to do to make it happen.
The bottom line is to get to any goal, we have to be willing to work for it. To do that properly, we must stop lying to ourselves and commit to prosperity. You are the only one that is fortunate enough to live your life. Make it count.
And so it is.
