The end of the year is a good time to reflect on what went right this year and what we can do better next year. I’ve recently done some soul-searching and I invite you to do the same. In between decorating, shopping and spending time with loved ones, ask yourself these three questions to put yourself in the right mindset for a successful 2018.
Question One: What were my biggest accomplishments in 2017? Before the calendar turns to 2018, take a look at where you’ve been. What are you most proud of? One of the things I am particularly proud of is the launch of the Center for Financial Advancement (CFA), a program designed to promote financial literacy and expand diversity and inclusion in the mortgage industry. The CFA is a collaboration between mortgage lenders and non-profit leaders and our partners in the endeavor are Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Freddie Mac and the Mortgage Bankers Association. It will be held on the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), with Fisk being the first university to host the program. I am happy that we got off to a great start and am looking forward to where this important program is headed.
Question Two: Where do I want to serve? Next, take some time to think about what your biggest priorities will be in 2018. I want to continue making the mortgage industry a more diverse and inclusive place. HomeFree-USA recently spoke with Tamara King, vice president of residential policy and member engagement for the Mortgage Bankers Association about diversity and she shared that a diverse workface brings together people with varied opinions who can see things from different perspectives. When diverse individuals share ideas and best practices, we approach challenges with creative solutions and build a mortgage industry that is more attuned to our customers’ needs.
Question Three: How can I build better partnerships? Partnerships have always been critical to HomeFree-USA’s success. We understand that we can do so much more when when work with others who have similar goals. That’s one of the reasons we work so hard to put together the HomeFree-USA Reaching Millions Leadership in Housing Training Conference every year, which brings together nonprofit professionals, mortgage banking leaders, local and national government officials and others dedicated to increasing the number of homeowners in communities across the nation. Take some time to figure out what new partnerships you can create next year and how you can take your current partnerships to the next level.
Let’s celebrate all that we have accomplished as an industry in 2017, and work together to create an even better 2018.
