As an industry, we talk about the importance of financial education for consumers but if we don’t take the time to educate ourselves, we’re simply the blind leading the blind.
Whether our goal is to reach more homeowners, raise more capital, be more effective leaders or make a greater impact, the key to success is education. When we learn new and better strategies to increase our success, our entire industry is uplifted as a result.
That’s why I’m so excited about what happened earlier this month. HomeFree-USA went to Portland Oregon, where we held our 11th annual Reaching Millions Leadership and Housing Counseling Training Conference. Each year, HomeFree-USA hosts more than 150 nonprofit community-based housing counseling leaders who represent millions of families across the country. We connect them with leaders in the mortgage industry, government, and business to discuss cutting-edge approaches and strategies that facilitate winning partnerships and increase success.
This year, the conference theme was Connect to More: Positioning Leaders for Profitable Outcomes and Greater Results. Topics we discussed ranged from the role of homeownership counseling in the future to ways to increase the number of homebuyers that come through our doors. We also discussed ways to make our organizations run more effectively, through such workshops as Innovative Ways to Reinvent Your Agency, and What Nonprofits Need to do to Stay Ahead of the Curve. We received valuable insight from leaders of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the United States Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. We heard from executives from such organizations as Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Fannie Mae, Ocwen and Citi.
Attendees left energized and ready to implement the strategies they learned. Since every conference is different, those who attend each year find new benefits every time. As one attendee put it, “I enjoy the coming together and the extension of meeting the people we work with on behalf of our clients. I love the diversity of our affiliates and meet new people every time I come to a conference.”
Others agreed with one participant saying, “the Reaching Millions Conference provides great opportunities to learn, network and re-establish corporate connections.”
